My name is
Mary and I have been home schooling for
over 12 years. I have always home schooled both
of my children. Home schooling has been the
best thing for our family and especially for my
son with autism. Over the years, I have
researched and utilized many types of therapies
and educational approaches (including ABA/DTT/Verbal
Behavior, neurodevelopmental therapy,
speech/language therapy, occupational therapy,
diet, supplements, chelation, social skills
therapy, Relationship Development Intervention (RDI),
Visualizing & Verbalizing, Fast Forword, and
more). I have incorporated components of many
of these therapies into my son's home school
program. I decided to offer my services as a
home school consultant for families interested
in or already home schooling their child with
ASD, PDD, Aspergers, or any other autism-related
disorder because so many families that I've
talked to are not satisfied with their child's
current academic progress or social experience
and I believe that I can help.
I encourage
any parent who is thinking about home schooling
to give it a try. Do your research, make a
plan, and ask for help if you need it. You know
your child better than anyone and you can do
it. And remember, it doesn't have to be a
forever decision. Many parents home school for
a few years to get their children up to speed
academically and to work on social skills in a
more controlled setting before sending their
children to school. As author John Holt says,
"To rescue a man lost in the woods, you must get
to where he is." We must start with where our
children ARE, not where they should be. If they
are not succeeding academically and socially in
school, then consider bringing them home where
they can experience academic and social success
in a comfortable environment. For some
children, just being removed from the stressful
school environment allows them to focus their
attention on learning instead of surviving.
